Gynecomastia (Breast Reduction For Men)
Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Gynecomastia, also known as breast reduction for men, is the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in males. Dr. Bell performs this procedure at his accredited surgical centre in Toronto.
Redefining Your Image With Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breasts of some men become enlarged or over-developed. It can occur in men of all ages, and can be the result of hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, illness, or the use of certain drugs.
As Dr. Bell explains, gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort, and impair your self -confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy, simply to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by:
- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue development
- A combination of both excess fat and glandular tissue
Gynecomastia may be present unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
This procedure can be a good choice for you if:
- Your breast development has stabilized
- You are physically healthy and of relatively normal weight
- You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large
Adolescents, in particular, may benefit from surgery at Dr. Bell’s accredited cosmetic surgery facility in Toronto, however, secondary procedures performed by Dr. Bell may also be required in the future, should breast development continue or resume.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
When Dr. Bell performs plastic surgery at his Toronto clinic to correct gynecomastia, it is technically referred to as reduction mammaplasty. The result is that the breast size is reduced, thus flattening and enhancing the chest contours.
Dr. Bell explains that, in severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved by Dr. Bell, during the breast reduction procedure.
It’s very important to follow Dr. Bell’s instructions and attend follow-up visits, as scheduled, at his Toronto clinic.
The final results of breast reduction in men are permanent, in many cases. However, if enlarged breasts resulted from the use of certain prescription medications, drugs including steroids or weight gain, you must be fully free from these substances and remain at a stable weight in order to maintain your results. Please discuss this with Dr. Bell before making changes to your prescription medications.
Your improved upper body will almost certainly enhance your self-image and confidence, whether in a shirt and tie, a t-shirt, or baring your chest at the beach.
